United Way Women’s Initiative - Limited Funding Summary Sheet January, 2011 Haven Recovery Center – Amelia Ave. Women’s Residential Treatment : $2000 Awarded Funds would be used to help renovate the clients’ rooms to provide a more conducive environment for a successful recovery. Mental Health America of East Central Florida, Inc. $5000 Awarded Funds would be used to help prevent intensive in-patient treatment through “crisis diversion counseling” for homeless women with mental health issues. Social Services Council of the Jewish Federation of Volusia Flagler Counties Awarded $2500 Funds to be used for diapers, toilet paper and hygienic products for clients in need. Project SELF $5000 Awarded Funds would help 3 transitioning youth avoid homelessness. Early Learning Coalition $10,000 awarded Requested funds will be used to help subsidize the cost of the “Bridge the Gap” program at the STAR Shelter. The funds will help provide support to women and children in the form of child care funding assistance, case management, transportation, rent/utility assistance, housing assistance, and health services. Children’s Advocacy Center $5000 awarded Funds will be used for the STOP program helping to divert women and children from homelessness. The Salvation Army Awarded $3000 Funds will help support the homeless women in the Veterans’ and HUD Transitional Supportive Housing Program.

Catholic Charities of Central Florida, Inc. ($5,000) Support for homeless pregnant women and/or women with small children
Children's Advocacy Center ($5,000) Provide counseling and advocacy for victims of abuse and neglect
The Chiles Academy ($5,000) Creation of two new child care rooms for homeless mothers rebuilding their lives
Family Renew Community ($2,500) Provide child care subsidies for homeless families seeking employment
The House Next Door ($2,500) Provide support for the IDignity program which helps families secure legal documents

Women's Initiative Announce New Community Outreach Program
In 2010, the Women's Initiative (Volusia) of Volusia and Flagler Counties launched a new initiative designed to broaden its reach and have a "hands on" impact on the community it serves. Upcoming events include a partnership project with the Neighborhood Center of West Volusia. United Way Women's Initiative (Volusia ) Announces New Leadership & New Community Outreach Program for 2010The United Way of Volusia/Flagler Women’s Initiative (Volusia) is proud to announce its new leadership team for 2010. Angela Cameron and Maurie Johnson have graciously agreed to Co-Chair the Women’s Initiative Board of Directors following former Co-Chairs, Donna Sue Sanders and Elan Kaney who led the Women’s Initiative to new heights in 2009. Angela is the Director of Marketing for the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort and has been since 1990. She has successfully marketed the Hilton Daytona Beach and has assisted with several other Pyramid Hotel Group properties in Florida. Angela moved to Daytona Beach in 1983 from Alabama where she worked in television broadcasting for 10 years. Angela has been an active member of the Women’s Initiative Group since 2006 serving as Co-Chair for the Special Events Committee from 2007-2009.
Angela is a dedicated member of the community serving on many professional and civic boards. Angela is on the Executive Board and Chairman of the Hotel/Motel Council for the Regional Daytona Chamber, she serves on the Main Street Re-development Board and also on the County’s Tourist Development Council. Other professional organizations include Co-Chair for the Convention & Visitors Bureau Advertising Committee, Chairman of the Technology Committee, Bethune-Cookman University’s Advisory Council and the Daytona International Speedway’s Checkered Flag Committee. Angela has been an active civic volunteer in the community. She is Past President and on the Executive Board for the Boys & Girls Club and Chairman of the Annual Steak & Steak Dinner since 2004, Chairman Friends of the Bandshell and Board Director of the Ocean Walk Village Alliance.
She has a true passion for giving back to the community through her leadership skills, marketing talents and genuine desire to help those in need.
“It is an honor for me to have been chosen to Co-Chair the United Way Women’s Initiative Board and to be associated with such talented and influential women. These women are making a significant difference in our community by giving back to women and children in our area. I look forward to a productive and enjoyable year with the Women’s Imitative Board.” states Angela.
Maurie Johnson, an Ambassador for Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, is a driving force behind the University’s diversity initiatives. Maurie is committed to encouraging young women to explore careers in aviation and aerospace and has identified various funding that will allow them to attend college.
Her volunteer activities include delivering Meals on Wheels, co-chairing the American Heart Association HeartWalk, participating in ERAU GEMS (8 – 12 yr olds: Girls Exploring Math & Science) summer camp, and numerous other community service projects. Maurie has also promoted the development of ERAU’s aviation academies, located in 12 public high schools, with the goal of strengthening science, technology, engineering, and math curricula.
Maurie is a native Texan, moving to Florida in 2003. She strongly believes in giving back to her community and cherishes her role as wife of ERAU President, Dr. John P. Johnson and serving as Embry-Riddle’s “first lady”. In order to help those in need, Maurie and John frequently host community fundraising receptions at their home.
Maurie says, “Serving this year as co-chair of the Women’s Initiative Board will be challenging but fulfilling. I feel privileged to serve with some of the most generous and community-minded women in Volusia County. I am excited about generating even more area wide support for this most worthy cause - - assisting United Way in reaching out to homeless women and children.”
The Women’s Initiative (Volusia) is also excited to announce the addition of a Community Outreach Committee, Co-Chaired by Martha Wilson and Shannon Booth.

Thanks to all the sponsors, donors, volunteers and attendees that made of our 2009 Power of the Purse Luncheon a success.
Some of the most influential women in Volusia and Flagler Counties filled the Hilton at Ocean Walk on Friday , August 28th in a luncheon to show financial support for the Initiative. It was the sixth year that the United Way of Volusia-Flagler has held its Power of the Purse fundraiser, which included a silent auction of various items, a live auction of fantastic trips, and a presentation by successful businesswomen, including our keynote speaker, Elaine Crowley, Executive Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Micheal's Stores.
The event raised nearly $90,000 for the women and children of Volusia and Flagler counties. The 2010 event will once again take place at the beautiful Hilton on Friday, August 13th.
