Women are learning the benefits and rewards of leveraging their time, talent and resources on behalf of their interests. They are merging power, money and the desire to act as catalysts for change within their communities.
Through strategic giving, women are at the leading edge of a new era in philanthropy: The Era of the Power of the Purse.
Consider these facts:
Women represent more than half the U.S. population. (U.S. Census)
Women control 83% of household spending. (The Trendsight Group)
As of 2002, there are an estimated 6.2 million majority-owned, privately held, women-owned firms in the U.S., accounting for 28% of all privately held firms in the country. (Center for Women's Business Research, projected from 1997 census data)
Women make up 1.6 million of the top wealth holders in the U.S., with a combined net worth of almost $2.2 trillion. (Women's Philanthropy Institute)
As of 2002, women-owned firms in the U.S. employ 9.2 million people and generate $1.15 trillion in sales. (Center for Women's Business Research, projected from 1997 census data)
In 2002, women held 12.4% of all board seats of Fortune 500 companies, up from 8.3% in 1993. (2001 Catalyst Census of Women Board Members)
Today, women view philanthropy not so much as giving as they do investing -- investing in change, investing in the future, and investing in causes that are meaningful.
"When women are fully involved, the benefits can be seen immediately; families are healthier; they are better fed; their income, savings and reinvestment go up. And what is true of families is true of communities, and eventually, of whole countries."
